Présentation du laboratoire
Le département de physique nucléaire conduit des activités expérimentales, en participant à des expériences auprès des accélérateurs de particules tels Alice au LHC, et des activités théoriques de recherche fondamentale centrées sur l’étude de la matière au niveau des noyaux et ses composants. Deux échelles sont étudiées au DPhN. La première se situe au niveau des quarks ou des gluons où des expériences telles Compass au Cern on put enrichir le débat sur l’asymétrie des réactions quantiques. La seconde concerne l’assemblage de nucléons (proton ou neutron) en atomes. Ainsi, des études sur les noyaux exotiques, c’est-à-dire des noyaux instables aux structures inhabituelles sont menées auprès de Spiral2. L’objectif premier du DPhN est l’approfondissement de nos connaissances sur ces systèmes et sur leurs réactions. Un autre domaine d’étude concerne les neutrinos, particule élémentaire gardant encore quelques mystères, dont les caractéristiques sont essentielles pour la compréhension de l’évolution de notre monde.
Pour répondre à ces grandes questions, le DPhN contribue à la conception et à l’exploitation des modèles théoriques comme la théorie de la chromodynamique quantique, des codes de calcul et des instruments qui permettent de mener à bien ces recherches. Les technologies nécessaires à la bonne conduire de ces programmes de recherche sont des défis technologiques importants. En effet, les réactions nucléaires sont particulièrement rapides (la désexcitation d’un atome se produit en environ une picoseconde) et sensibles.
