Objectives

The objective of the program “Economics of Sustainable Development and the Environment” course is to offer training dealing with all environmental issues from an economic point of view.

Graduates must have the skills to design strategies to address energy and environmental challenges (e.g., climate change, overexploitation of natural resources or even water and air pollution). They must be able to integrate these strategies into production, service and consulting professions. They must also have the academic knowledge enabling the most motivated to integrate private and public research. And be able to integrate national and international decision-making centers (civil service, communities, international organizations).

Environmental issues require mobilizing multiple knowledge in integrated approaches and graduates must: i) master economic theory and its applications to decision-making; ii) be immediately operational as soon as the mention is released, and know how to implement the modeling tools, statistical and econometric methods as well as the necessary IT resources; iii) understand the political, economic and scientific issues and know recent research developments; iv) have empirical knowledge of sectors and societal and political issues as well as managerial knowledge (cost-benefit analyses, decision-making in uncertain times, management of controversies and usage conflicts, etc.).

Course Prerequisites

The objective of the “Economics of sustainable development and the environment” program in the “Economics of the environment, energy and transport” Msc specialty is to offer training dealing with all environmental transition issues. and ecological from an economic point of view.  For direct entry into M2, the profiles allowing integration into the mention are an M1 in economics with a quantitative dimension, or a bac+4 level acquired in an engineering school, a business school, or any other French or foreign training deemed equivalent by the selection comittee.

Specific pedagogical requirements

Note that part of the lectures are in French and a decent knowledge of the French language is required to attend the program.

Skills
  • Etre en capacité de réaliser une étude d'impact d'un projet ou d'une règlementation publique en ce qui concerne les aspects économiques et environnementaux.

  • Contribuer, grâce aux outils scientifiques et aux instruments économiques, à la résolution des problèmes environnementaux et de développement durable pour une gestion raisonnée des ressources.

  • Concevoir de nouveaux modèles économiques intégrant des critères sociaux et environnementaux à toutes les étapes de la production et de la consommation dans une entreprise ou une administration.

  • Coordonner une analyse des performances environnementales d'une entreprise (RSE).

  • Construire des outils permettant des analyses quantitatives des aspects économiques et environnementaux dans une entreprise ou une institution publique et mobiliser les données nécessaires. Savoir appliquer les outils de gestion de projet pour le cadrage, le développement et le suivi d'un projet environnemental.

  • Maitrser les outils et méthodes nécessaires à la recherche en économie de l'environnement dans le but de préparer une thèse.

Post-graduate profile

The skills acquired at the end of the training include the ability to:
- understand environmental and climate issues in public policies and private choices;
- analyze environmental assessments and externalities linked to a production process or a value chain;
- carry out and interpret prospective studies, mobilizing the necessary methods and software;
- model and quantify an economic phenomenon (econometrics, operational research, simulation methods);
- develop an analysis method for the development of intervention strategies;
- know how to put project management and risk management tools into practice; develop business plans to study project profitability and financing;
- understand the mechanisms and institutions at work in public policies and negotiation strategies;
- organize the coordination of actors in order to make the proposed solutions operational;
- develop original research projects by mobilizing empirical knowledge of the sector and cutting-edge analysis tools from the academic discipline.

Career prospects

Over the last five years of operation of the "Environmental Economics" course, it appears from these surveys that 37% of graduates have gone to consulting or research companies, 24% to large environmental services companies or agri-food or banking. 12% continued with a phD, 16% in administration. In terms of types of jobs accessible, graduates occupy the following jobs: CSR or sustainable development executive within a company; Project Manager; research and development project manager; responsible for technical-economic, strategic and environmental studies; responsible (water, energy, waste) in a company or local community; engineer/economist in a design office, a local community, a government agency or an international organization; expert on energy-related environmental issues with national or international institutions; researcher (if pursuing a phD thesis).
