Objectives

The objective of the "Food economics" program in the "Environmental, energy and transport economics" Msc specialty is to offer training dealing with all the questions of the bio-economy, especially agriculture and food from an economic point of view.

The program allows students to understand the environmental, health and socio-economic issues linked to our food. The lectures: economics, statistics and data processing; the different actors in the food chain as well as the tools to understand their strategies (political economy, industrial economy); the production methods of farmers, the choices of consumers and the decisions of agri-food companies will be explained theoretically and analyzed empirically using modeling tools and data processing (econometrics, behavioral and experimental economics, theory of incentives ); the agricultural and nutritional policies implemented and their consequences are developed and discussed through the presentation of economic experiences; the circular economy (eco-design, waste, waste) and the analysis of the life cycle of products (innovation, management, marketing) are approached using case studies and numerous examples.

Course Prerequisites

Students who have validated the M1 of the EEET mention or an M1 of economics with a quantitative dimension, finance, management or applied mathematics. Students with a bac +4 level acquired in an Ecole Normale Supérieure, an Engineering School, a Business School, an Institute of Political Studies or any French or foreign training deemed equivalent by the selection comittee are also allowed to apply.  Note that several of the lectures are given in French and that a decent knowledge of the language is required to join the program.

Specific pedagogical requirements

Direct entry in the M2 "Food economics" is possible for students with 4 years of university attendence, in economics, mathematics, agronomy or food sciences. Applications are open between mid March and end of May. Please note that early applications are recommended.

Note that several of the lectures are given in French and that a decent knowledge of the language is required to join the program.

Skills
  • Elaborer des stratégies d'entreprise face aux demandes des consommateurs et des citoyens dans le secteur alimentaire.

  • Modéliser les décisions des producteurs (agricoles et industriels), les comportements et les choix des consommateurs, et les différentes stratégies des entreprises agro-alimentaires.

  • Mettre en œuvre des recommandations afin de définir des politiques agricoles et nutritionnelles (incitations, taxes, subventions, normes, campagnes d’information) adéquates avec l’objectif de durabilité.

  • Concevoir des études expérimentales et analyser à partir de données les comportements des différents acteurs présents dans le secteur alimentaires afin de déterminer les politiques publiques à mettre en place.

  • Comparer de nouveaux modèles de production et de consommation liés à l’économie circulaire (innovation, éco-conception, gestion des déchets).

  • Mener à bien des projets de recherche en économie dans le domaine de l'alimentation, la santé et l'environnement.

Post-graduate profile

At the end of the training, students will be able to:
- design strategies to address food, health and environmental challenges and be able to integrate these strategies into production, service and consulting professions;
- analyze the markets (supply and demand) as well as the technological and financial aspects of the sectors concerned;
- understand and apply the concepts of needs analysis and project management;
- carry out and interpret prospective studies, using the necessary methods and software; - develop a multi-criteria analysis method in the development of strategic intervention choices;
- know how to put project management and risk management tools into practice; - develop business plans to study project profitability and financing;
- organize the coordination of actors in order to make the proposed solutions operational;
- model and quantify an economic phenomenon (econometrics, operational research, simulation methods);
- understand the mechanisms and institutions at work in public policies and negotiation strategies; - understand environmental, climatic, food and energy issues;
- develop original research projects by mobilizing empirical knowledge of the sector and cutting-edge analysis tools from the academic discipline.

Career prospects

This program allows students to work in the following sectors: technical-economic studies and research; strategic and/or financial advice within companies; engineering in a company offering integrated services; design, development, assembly and implementation of projects; research on all economic aspects linked to the food and environmental transition; public sector (State bodies, ministries, agencies, local authorities); agri-food and environmental companies Students can occupy the following positions: Project Manager; research and development project manager; responsible for technical-economic, strategic and environmental studies; risk manager; Consulting professions (firms, design offices, certification and auditing) are particularly open to them. researcher (if pursuing a phD thesis)
