Innovation by European Students

Every year, European Students participate in Extreme Blue (https://ibm.biz/Bdq8wx) , a global program developed by IBM to give students an insight into the world of innovation.
Grouped together as a team, they worked throughout the summer to find a solution to a real problem posed by an IBM customer.

Hosted in IBM labs (in France, England ...), they benefit from the advice of "mentors", in-house specialists in technology or management, who devote time to this mission. The students discover the customer's needs and envisage theoretical solutions; then they look for feasible technical solutions, before having them validated by the customer, developing them and preparing a "demo".

During this meetup, 4 teams of students present/demonstrate you the solution they have developed for their client.

Team 1

Decision support products are increasingly using recommendations from Machine Learning, but it is clear that the way the recommendation is presented influences the decisions made by individuals.
The solution presented will establish instructions for the use of ML recommendations in decision-support products to enable our teams to design person-machine interaction without directing the person's eventual decisions. Students will demonstrate how to measure the improvements obtained qualitatively (lower error rate) and quantitatively (more decisions made per unit of time).

Team 2 with PACE

Pace is a charity that supports children and young adults who have sensory motor disorders. Daily tasks that some would consider basic can be a struggle.
This Extreme Blue team are helping design a solution for their user who is a 0-18 y/o child with a range of neuromuscular and cognitive disabilities. The user needs a system of switches to interact with objects in their daily life and current systems of assistive technologies are costly, complex, and un-customisable.

Team 3 with MARWELL

Marwell Wildlife is a zoo that specialises in conservation activities with over 140 acres of space for their 100s of animals.
The students present a solution around the visitor experience and support for conservation by tracking animal behaviour patterns and allowing visitors to know where the animal is in the enclosure without spoiling the fun for the visitors.

Team 4 with FASHION

This solution meets the needs of a high-end English clothing retailer.
Sustainable fashion is a concern for retailers and shoppers and is influencing buying habits. Retailers need a way to secure the trust of their customers and make reliable claims about their efforts towards sustainability, whilst maintaining their high end reputation.
