Professor Steve Bourgault received his Ph.D. (joint doctoral thesis) in 2009 from both INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier and the Université de Rouen, France under the supervision of Professors Alain Fournier and David Vaudry. His graduate research work focused on the molecular pharmacology and medicinal chemistry of peptide hormones, on the development of synthetic methods for solid phase peptide synthesis and on the structural study of polypeptides. After receiving his Ph.D., Steve Bourgault started a postdoctoral training at the Department of Chemistry of The Scripps Research Institute (USA) under the supervision of Professor Jeffery W. Kelly, a world-leader in the field of protein misfolding diseases. His postdoctoral research aimed at elucidating the biochemical mechanisms of transthyretin amyloidoses, which are an important class of senile and/or familial protein misfolding disorders. In 2012, Dr Bourgault moved back to Montreal where he started his independent scientific career as a Professor at the Department of Chemistry of UQAM. He currently holds the Canada Research Chair in Chemistry of Biological Assemblies. His research work is focusing on fundamental aspects of protein self-assembly into amyloid fibrils and on the engineering of peptide assemblies. His research team is developing (bio)chemical strategies to modulate the supramolecular architecture of protein nanostructure to design novel vaccines against the influenza viruses.
